Named in honour of Mary Eckford, one of Newcastle’s pioneering European settlers in the early 1800’s, Ms Mary is social and warm, embracing the region’s artisans and farmers.
Deli, bar, lounge? You decide. Ms Mary evolves throughout the day transitioning from morning meeting spot to lunch date location to end of day chill. Swing by for some good honest food, Hunter Valley tipple or a killer cocktail guaranteed to cure the toughest day.
Come as you are, grab a cosy lunch and local wine, enjoy the moment and let the world pass you by.
Falling on tough times, at just 14 Mary Eckford (née Horell) was found guilty of stealing an apron and a handkerchief in Devon, England and was promptly shipped off to Australia arriving in Newcastle in 1801.
Little did she know, this may well have been the best decision of her life. On her voyage out to Australia she met her future husband, William Eckford (who later became Newcastle’s harbour pilot). They went on to have eight children and she got to live out her days in our beautiful city.
Ms Mary, we salute you.
