Byron Bay with kids

There are so many lovely things to do with the kids in Byron Bay and the surrounding areas. Surfing is obviously a big one, and beach time, of course. There are also a few other wonderful experiences to be enjoyed that are not quite as obvious. Discover some of our favourite activities for Byron Bay with kids and the family:

1. Beach time and Surf

Torakina Beach in Brunswick Heads is the perfect family-friendly beach. It is small and sheltered and nestled between the break walls at the mouth of the Brunswick River. The water is almost always flat here, meaning perfect swimming conditions for kids. Access is via the grassy Torakina Park, where you will also find shady picnic tables, barbecues, and toilets.

If the kids are wanting to learn how to surf, Byron’s The Pass and Wategos are both amazing surf beaches for beginners. There are a number of surf schools that cater for kids. Check out Soul Surf School as one option for their experienced instructions for children aged 5-12 years old.

2. Waterlily Park

Waterlily Park is a children’s playground paradise. The only playground we have come across where you can find a double 40m flying fox (one seat has a full chair and seatbelt). It is amazing! Most of the play equipment is made out of wood and there are plenty of things for kids to climb - up and down and across - as well as an awesome double slide, nest swing, and tennis courts. Located next to a pond that is full of water lilies (hence its name), this is the perfect park to while away a few hours with the kids. There are barbecues and toilets as well.

3. Crystal Castle

Crystal Castle is another magical place that children absolutely love. Tucked away in the hinterland, a 30 minute drive from town, Crystal Castle is home to magical gardens that are filled with Tibetan stupas and prayer flags, buddhas, giant crystals (including the world’s largest amethyst), an ancient labyrinth, bamboo forest, crystal shops, and a cafe.  If you are lucky, you might coincidentally time your visit with one of their beautiful sound bath healing sessions that take place each day inside the labyrinth. Kids love to sit and listen to the different sounds of the healing quartz bowls. It’s very beautiful here.

4. Circus School

Circus Arts Byron Bay in the Industrial Estate is a super fun place to take the kids in Byron Bay. Boasting a massive 1200 sqm indoor space with a 10m flying trapeze, Circus Arts have a number of circus programs on offer to suit all children of all age levels, including full and half day circus programs, flying trapeze, indoor climbing, an Olympic-size trampoline, and kids play space.

5. Zephyr Horses

If you are wanting a super memorable Byron Bay experience with the kids, we recommend booking the kids into a horse adventure with Zephyr Horses. A unique coastal horse ranch in Byron Bay, the lovely team at Zephyr offer personalised horse tours, on the beach, through rainforest, or at ‘The Farm’. They also have a ‘Mini-Zephyrs’ (pony) Club for kids as well.
So many things! So little time!

6. Where to stay with kids in Byron Bay?

Okay, this one is a bonus! Crystalbrook Byron is a nature-lover’s paradise and perfect for families. Each of the 92 suites is equipped with a kitchenette with full-sized fridge, deep soak tubs AND a shower (for discerning tots who like options) and an in-suite washer and dryer which makes deciding what to pack a whole lot easier. The Resort is set on 45-acres of subtropical rainforest and connected by a series of boardwalks. This means there’s lots of space to explore and burn off a bit of steam. Splash around in the kid’s pool or simply curl up under the covers and stream their favourite show via Google Chromecast. Hot tip: don’t forget to pick up a DIY Scavenger Hunt map from the front desk.
