Experience the magical underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef

For many, a trip to Cairns wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of the Seven Wonders of the World: The Great Barrier Reef. Composed of more than 2,900 reefs and 900 islands, the reef is home to an extraordinary diversity of life, including some of the world’s most endangered species, turtles and stingrays.

Whether seeking an overnight liveaboard dive experience or snorkelling one of the many impressive reefs, there are plenty of ways to explore the remarkable beauty of the underwater wonderland. Located in the heart of Cairns, the Cairns Marlin Marina offers a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef with reef tours departing daily.

Explore the Daintree Rainforest

Where the rainforest meets the reef, the Daintree is believed to be one of the oldest rainforests in the world and is a nature-lovers delight. The region starts at Mossman Gorge, an hour drive north of Cairns, and continues along to Cape Tribulation and upwards towards Cooktown.

Explorers can expect to see a plethora of wildlife: from tropical birds and reptiles to native fauna and flora and even the odd crocodile for the brave hearted.

Destination Daintree offers a range of self-guided itineraries and attractions to see and explore.

Walk the Cairns Esplanade

A favourite among locals and tourists alike, a stroll along the Cairns esplanade is the perfect way to book mark your day. A picturesque 2500 metre stretch of parklands and lawns overlooking the Coral Sea, the esplanade is lined with cafes and bars or BBQ and amenities for those looking to plan their own adventure. The southern end of the esplanade is the perfect spot to enjoy the bustling Cairns dining scene, with Boardwalk Social a popular afternoon destination for live music and great gastro-pub classics. For those holidaying with kids, Muddy’s is a popular water-park destination or the man-made, iconic Cairns Lagoon is also a welcoming spot to cool off and take a dip.

Relax at Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas

Hire a car, download your favourite play list, plug in Four Mile Beach on your navigator and hit the road. State Route 44 from Cairns to Port Douglas is one of the most picturesque stretches of road this side of the equator. Travel along the sea front as you wind in and out of tropical rainforest with epic scenic views and plenty of breath-taking lookouts along the way. Located approximately 80 minutes north of Cairns, Four Mile Beach is tropical paradise personified and the perfect day trip getaway. Think swaying palms, azure waters, white sandy beaches and wide-open spaces. After a day at the beach, take a 10-minute stroll along the ocean front to experience world-class bars and restaurants in the heart of Port Douglas.
