Experiences

Whatever your choice of adventure, we can design your perfect outback experience at Crystalbrook Lodge.

Chillagoe Cave Tour

Discover the world’s most diverse geology through a privately guided day tour to the iconic Chillagoe Caves. Our 4WD coach will take you on a journey through Chillagoe’s marble quarries and stop for a visit to Tom Prior’s legendary Ford Museum. You’ll experience lunch at the Chillagoe “Top Pub” for an outback style Aussie burger or fish ’n’ chips before you get to explore the spectacular limestone caves themselves.

If you want an intimate look at the awe-inspiring beauty of the Australian Outback, this inclusive tour is for you.

Bush Walking Tracks

Explore the property by foot or on mountain bike and discover firsthand the environment and adventure that awaits. The beautiful trails follow the south side of the lake in a loop back to the lodge. There are a variety of trails available to suit everyone, and are a beautiful way to welcome in the day. Guided and unguided bush walks available. See walking trails.

Swimming

For absolute relaxation, take a refreshing swim or sit back and unwind in the 55,000-litre wet edge magna pool. The incredible pool is perfectly positioned at the front of the lodge overlooking Crystalbrook Lake and the dam wall.

If it is a swim in the lake itself you desire, feel free to have a dip and soak in the authenticity and vastness of the natural element.

Wildlife Spotting

Crystalbrook is not only home to about 2000 head of Brahman and Brangus cattle but also to wild brumbies, bush pigs, dingos and reptiles. As you explore the property, you are sure to spot an array of wildlife natural to the environment.

The lake is also a mecca for incredible wildlife spotting experiences, and is inhabited by freshwater crocodiles (not to worry – these are not dangerous to humans) plus over 4000 barramundis along with plenty of other freshwater fish species.

Note: The lists of all species are current and show all animals we identified so far at Crystalbrook. Far North Queensland is till to this day sparsely populated so there is always a chance to find something no one found before.

Star Gazing

As the sun sets on your incredible day, we light a campfire where you can welcome in the evening with friends or enjoy the quietness of the bush with your partner. Watch the moon rise over the lake and see the firmament come alive (particularly spectacular during the dry season), showing off millions of stars including the Milky Way and iconic Southern Cross.

Fishing

The Crystalbrook Lake is a fisherman’s mecca. Spend your days catching barramundi, sooty grunter or crocodilian long tom on the 120ha privately owned oasis. Guided or unguided, you can choose to fish off the private pontoon boat, take out a kayak or polycraft electric boat, or flick lures across the lily pads along the bank.

The catch you make at Crystalbrook is one you can brag about for a lifetime.

Sunset Boat Tours

With the Sweetwater electric pontoon boat, we take you for a fish during the day or for a champagne cruise in the afternoon to soak in the incredible views as the sun set behind the lodge.

Bird Watching

The combination of our outback location and immense bodies of water create the perfect environment for an abundance of birdlife to thrive. More than 60 bird species can be found on the property including majestic sea-eagles, pelicans, brolgas and magpie-geese, red-tailed black cockatoos, blue-winged kookaburras, kingfishers and honeyeaters. View our bird list.

Kayaks

Take out the kayak and immerse yourself into the undisturbed environment, exploring the far reaches of the lake. You might see a herd of wild brumbies, lotus birds walking by on lily pads, pelicans, brolgas, magpie geese and other birds in their natural element.

Paddle Board

Paddle along the beautiful lake on one of our stand up paddle boards. There is no rush to take in the scenery and abundance of wild life as you meander along the vastness of the lake.
